In 1848 Walter Hunt invented a "Volition Repeating Rifle" that used a complex system of mechanics and a lever to make it possible for a marksman to quickly fire a new type of ammunition. Hunt called this ammunition the "Rocket Ball" due to its hollow base that contained the powder needed to fire the bullet. From the 1850's through the 1860's Hunt's inventions would rapidly be modified and improved upon creating the repeating cowboy rifles known today as the weapons of the old west.
